How to do your TO DO Lists

This one I really have to do myself too.. *sigh*

Anyway, so how do you do that things you've put in your To Do list?

First, let's make sure you did your To Do list. You have to have the initiative to do this list because nothing is more irritating and demotivating than having someone else tell you what you have to do all the time. So here's some tips to start with:

Create your own To Do list.
Start by deciding what you want included in your To Do list. Do you want it to be just the list of tasks? Do you want to include contacts? Reminders? Notes? Do you want it online? With an app? What?!

Organize your tasks.
If you're doing it manually or conventionally, arrange and re-arrange the tasks listed according to the level of priority. Mark off or separate high-priority tasks (those with the deadliest deadlines!), normal priority tasks (those you can do and should finish any time of the day), and those you can do later. You can even write down task-ideas, or those that you plan to do, but do not have deadlines or can wait for several days without yourself or your boss going nuts.
If you chose online apps, or desktop managed apps, then find one that'll suit your needs - and wants. Found this article, it contained online To Do lists that I've found interesting too (25 To Do Lists to Stay Productive).
Decorate your list.
Use different colors or markers for tasks done, high-priority tasks, tasks you can do later, tasks you're just planning on doing so much later, etc. Use sticky notes or Post-its. Create a scrapbook slash to do list. The more you like the looks and feel of your To Do list, the more you'll use it - just like your favorite shirt.

Make your list authoritative.
Give your list authority to reward or punish you. If you complete all your set deadlines for the day, go ahead and reward yourself. If you failed, well, you missed re-decorating your to-do list, and you can't have that extra whipped cream over your favorite frappe.

Show off your list.
The more people you show your list to, the more you'll be pressured to tell or show them how much you've marked off.

So....
Is this in your To Do list already?

Doing 5S, I mean 6S, to my Office

I have been invited several times by our human resources department to join this 5S Housekeeping traning session and I have never been interested.

Until, I finally awoke to the fact that my desk looked like hell, and I couldn't find a paper clip amidst all the clutter. I had too many papers lying around, too many teeny weeny thingies jumping around my laptop, which practically took over the center of my desk. Don't get me wrong, my desk isn't small, and my laptop isn't too big. It's just that I have too much stuff ON my desk which I practically don't use every single minute of the day.

So I decided to search the net for this 5S thing, and a twitter friend, @OlinTaha pointed out that it's now 6. And voila, after searching more, it really was 6!

Implementing the 6S Rules.

  1. SORT. After looking around and noticing this 2 big piles of paper, I decided to sort it all out. What to take note of:
    •  Company's retention policy on documents - this will help you decide which ones you need for reference and which ones you can throw away.
    • What I need everyday - the documents/forms I need for my work everyday.
    • Those that need immediate attention - very self explanatory, right?
    • Pending items - reports, forms and others that need attention too or those that were just set aside for the time being because you prioritized.
    • Trash bin/shredder - you need one near you so you can just immediately and painlessly toss your unnecessary clutter into these useful things.
  2. STRAIGHTEN OUT / SET IN ORDER. Once you've sorted out which ones are still needed and you've actually finally thrown away that 2007 budget proposal, you can now start to set order on your office.
    • Set aside a "personal" space for your things like your pens, stapler, planner, binders, telephone, and even your mug.
    • Just like any other space, try to maintain each one, do not let something get out of its "personal" space because once this happens, then it's not gonna be so orderly anymore.
    • Add or put labels on folders, binders, containers, etc. A basic organizing skill, this also helps you identify the contents of a huge binder without creating chaos on your desk.
    • Compartmentalize your bulletin/cork board. If you're like me and you have your own cork board in your office, go ahead and straighten things out. Separate personal notes and tacks from those work related. You can use adhesive tapes or colored pins to separate these compartments for easy reference.
    • Again, be creative! Use colored papers, post-its or even colored adhesive tapes to set those "personal" spaces or labels. The more involved you get, the more importance you'd give to this order you have finally created.
  3. SHINE / SWEEP. Since we're already organizing things and whatnot, why not go a step further and not wait for the cleaning guy? Wipe the surfaces of your desk, the filing cabinet, chairs, side tables, counter tops and even the printer. You can always do this just once in a while, let's say once a week, just to start things going. The cleaner it is, the more at ease you'd feel toward your workspace.
  4. STANDARDIZE. I actually do not have the solid idea on how to implement this to my desk/office, but I think this can be related to being organized. By setting a "standard" on how to handle things, like using neatly cut scratch papers for little notes or phone call inquiries and tiny reminders, you can lessen the chances of losing that important telephone number you scribbled "somewhere" when your superior started yelling. Or, just continue following your company standards or policies. I think that'll help a lot.
  5. SUSTAIN. Don't procrastinate! If you need to yell at yourself and risk looking like a dimwit to anyone who'd accidentally see you talking to yourself, do it! Do not put off doing something if you can finish it today. This also goes with your organizing and cleaning up. If you can put that file neatly into that blue-colored folder, go ahead. Make your day. *lol! so cheesy...*
  6. SAFETY. And because you are already starting to be a neat-freak, you'd notice that you'll take extra steps in cleaning up or straightening out without even realizing that you have just added a safety feature to your everyday things, like making sure that the wires are neatly tuck and are not sticking out to snag someone's foot, or that you have kept that big metal scissors from the hands of a disorganized and stressed workmate, or simply reducing the risk of being smothered with smoking hot brewed coffee by simply clearing out that space away from your telephone.

Isn't that easy?

The Procrastinator's Creed

*A repost from The Secret Agent's blog.

  • I believe that if anything is worth doing, it would have been done already.
  • I shall never move quickly, except to avoid more work or find excuses.
  • I will never rush into a job without a lifetime of consideration.
  • I shall meet all of my deadlines directly in proportion to the amount of bodily injury I could expect to receive from missing them.
  • I firmly believe that tomorrow holds the possibility for new technologies, astounding discoveries, and a reprieve from my obligations.
  • I truly believe that all deadlines are unreasonable regardless of the amount of time given.
  • I shall never forget that the probability of a miracle, though infinitely small, is not exactly zero.
  • If at first I don't succeed, there is always next year.
  • I shall always decide not to decide, unless of course I decide to change my mind.
  • I shall always begin, start, initiate, take the first step, and/or write the first word, when I get around to it.
  • I obey the law of inverse excuses which demands that the greater the task to be done, the more insignificant the work that must be done prior to beginning the greater task.
  • I know that the work cycle is not plan/start/finish, but is wait/plan/plan.
  • I will never put off until tomorrow, what I can forget about forever.
  • I will become a member of the ancient Order of Two-Headed Turtles (the Procrastinator's Society) if they ever get it organized.

    15 Funny Thoughts on Marriage

Heck, about 4 months from now and I'm getting married. What do you think is marriage? Here are some humorous thoughts to blow your mind away!

    1. Marriage is not a word. It's a sentence (a life sentence).

    2. Marriage is love. Love is blind. Therefore marriage is an institution for the blind.

    3. Marriage is a three-ring circus: engagement ring, wedding ring and suffering.

    4. Getting married is very much like going to a restaurant with friends. You order what you want, and when you see what the other person has, you wish you had ordered that instead.

    5. Son: "How much does it cost to get married, Dad?" Father: "I don't know son, I'm still paying for it!"

    6. Love is one long sweet dream. Marriage is the alarm clock.

    7. They say that when a man holds a woman's hand before marriage, it's love; after marriage, it's self-defense.

    8. There was this lover who said that he would go through hell for her. They got married, and now he is going through HELL.

    9. When a man steals your wife, there is no better revenge that to let him keep her.

    10. Marriage is man and woman becoming one. The trouble starts when they try to decide which one.

    11. "I married Ms Right. I just didn't know that her first name is 'Always'! "

    12. A man was complaining to a friend: "I had it all - money, a beautiful house, the love of a beautiful woman, then pow! It was all gone!" " What happened," asked his friend. He says, "My wife found out!"

    13. At a cocktail party, one woman said to another: "Aren't up you wearing your ring on the wrong finger?" The other replied, "Yes, I am. I married the wrong man!"

    14. It doesn't matter how often a married man changes his job; he still ends up with the same BOSS!

    15. When a man opens the door of his car for his wife, you can be sure of one thing - either the car is new or the wife is.

So how about it? Don't forget to Bookmark or Share this to your friends and family, or subscribe to The Blue Speckled Diary by Email for free updates, leave a your thoughts on what you think marriage is!

My Own List of Blogging Tools

    my planner!
Every blogger now is a-buzzing regarding lists and posts and tools and widgets... And of course, I won't be an outcast. Here's my very own list of those too.

    1. My Journal/Planner. This is the planner I got from a marketing stint here in the Philippines wherein the publisher iinside my planner, chaos!tself gave out these stylish planners October of last year.

    2. Laptop. Well, actually, my laptop's really old and just about ready to rmy old laptop.. need a new one...*wink!*etire. I not only use this for blogging, but also for my day job as an internal auditor. This laptop has served me well, and maybe, just maybe any kind soul working in Sony or HP, Dell or Asus, can wholeheartedly give me a freebie. I'll blog about it for the rest of the year, I promise!

    3. see the flash drives? how about the parker pen? lol!Next, My pens and thumb drives - of course for taking down notes and copying files from everywhere. Most of the contents of my thumb drives are ebooks, pictures, music files and word documents.

    4. Glasses. Don't get me wrong, I can blog without my glasses, but there are just certain times of the day or week that I can't see clearly! They're really not that thick, for my astigmatism... they were just prescribed to alleviate headaches I get with too much reading. If I remember correctly, they're for astigmatism, and they're pretty old too. I got them when I was still in college, about 4 or 5 years ago. Yeah, I can't "afford" to get a new pair.

    5. Tumbler. For coffee or water, drink up!whichever I like at the moment, whether hot or cold, it doesn't really matter 'coz this can hold it quite conveniently.

    6. Camera phone. I own this cool Sony Ericsson W760 from another project, but I still don't have a post to brag about that yet due to a disclosure agreement. Lol! Anyway, this phone's currently my favorite 'coz I can immediately post pictures I took directly to this blog. The camera is also nice because it's already at 3.2 megapixel capacity. And did I mention it's a Walkman phone already? Cool speakers. ;)

    7. Blogger.com, Twitter, Tweetgrid and other sites. Pretty self explanatory, with all the other blogs available in the net. But to sum it all up:my SE walkman phone
    • Blogger.com is of course the blog platform I'm hosting The Blue Speckled Diary in. It's free, so no fuss.
    • Twitter, the micro-blogging platform where you can post links, updates and news in a 140 character space ONLY.
    • Tweetgrid is the site I use to update my twitter. It has cool features like an in-depth,built-in search mechanism which basically works like google or yahoo. You can easily re-tweet, reply and DM using tweetgrid too; and by clicking at the icon/picture of the user, you can easily go through his/her profile and follow!

So there, got my tools and tips posted. Now, any offers? *wink*

    Top 5 Mistakes Travelers Make

It's no surprise that during long weekends and holidays, people go on vacation - out of town or out of the country, on a plane, bus or boat. But time and time again, travelers do these Top 5 Mistakes.

    • Packing too much. Many times, people who travel - like me - just brings too many things with them resulting in a back-breaking trunk that we end up despising. We bring too many clothes thinking that we need all of it, too many shoes, to match the clothes of course, and sometimes, too many unnecessary things like magazines to "pass the time" while traveling, too many accessories (why do you need to many when you're just sitting there on the plane or in the bus?).
    • Packing too little. Yes. Packing too little. This results from over-thinking and generally over-reacting to number 1 up there. Here the mistake is that we brought too little shirts when we knew out trip was going to make up all sweaty and sticky; too little underwear (eeewww!) when we knew we really had to bring enough; too little food for the long long trip, or too little water when it's hot, too little tissue to wipe up off after all the food and water, or too little cash, when we actually knew that the place does not accept credit cards!
    • Not Planning everything. Of course! An unplanned travel can bring disasters, wrinkles and stress instead of relaxation and rest. Too little planning or no planning at all can make your trip a living hell. Imagine, not having your car checked or tuned-up, not bringing a map or activating your GPS, not having hotel or inn reservations (what the...?), not really knowing what to do when you get there, or how much of your savings you're willing to blow off for this trip.
    • Bringing the wrong people. Couldn't be emphasized more than needed - you also have to know who to bring with you. If you're married and have children and the trip is a familiy affair, then don't fuss. Of course you have to bring everybody. But if you're single and this trip was for a bonding moment for you and your clique, be careful because some friends might think you're also gonna like their friends who you'll meet for the first time ever because they thought they'd tag them along! Sometimes the crowd you're with can be the deciding factor on how to describe your holiday vacation. ;)
    • Going to the Wrong Place. Yeah. Wrong things, wrong crowd, wrong budget, wrong place. terrible. You were thinking it was a haven for solemn and peaceful recollection, and you find out it's a crappy rathole. Hmmm. Better do some research first and also monitor from word of mouth which places match your plans and goals for the trip. Make sure it's safe too and within your budget!
To put it bluntly - plan, plan, plan. And talk to other friends and family who have tried traveling already, especially if you're planning on going on an adventure. Just to make sure you don't blow your top! Enjoy your vacations every one, and have a solemn and safe Holy Week.
